Dr. Robert D. Flannigan, Clinic founder and director, was born in Paragould, Arkansas, the second of three children of Robert and Jessie Lee Flannigan. Bob grew up in Monette and attended the Monette Public schools where he was an honor graduate from Monette High School. In his senior year Bob was also elected class president. The serious-minded young Flannigan showed an early interest in math and science, but he also enjoyed active participation in school sports, especially – but not exclusively – Basketball; Indeed, he also loved anything to do with the outdoors.
On weekends while in high school, Bob worked at the family store: “Flannigan’s”. After graduating, Bob started college at Arkansas State University, working his way thru college employed as a field representative measuring crop acreage for the A.S.C.S. (now F.S.A.) government program. At ASU Bob majored in Zoology and Chemistry and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. ASU was also where he met and became engaged to Cindy Richardson.
After college, Bob Flannigan taught junior high science at Monette public schools, until he applied for dental school at the University of TN. He received an interview and was quickly accepted to the summer 1974 dental class. He and Cindy were married in December of that year.
On June 4, 1977 Dr. Bob graduated dental school at the University of TN with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, and received “The Student Annual Award” from the Department of Periodontology; one of only five annual department awards given.
Much of Bob’s graduation excitement was obscured, however, by Cindy’s abrupt bout of labor and the arrival of first child, R. David Flannigan III. At 1:58 am on a June day Robert “David” Flannigan, III announced that Dad’s graduation had to take a back seat to his new baby boy. Three years later, Rebekah came calling at the Flannigan household; a baby girl born in September of 1980.
On August 1, 1977, Bob and Cindy opened a new dental office in Monette. The work wasn’t easy; building a practice and raising two children, especially since Bob was simultaneously helping other local children; coaching ball teams, umpiring games, and teaching Royal Ambassadors programs and Sunday School at church, where he was also a volunteer usher. Always a family dedicated to church, social and civic matters, Bob also accepted appointments to various committees, including ball team associations, a swim team board, church committees and city related committees.
Always active in State, County and Local politics Bob has also served as an elected city councilman. He is also focused activities in dental professional organizations.
Dr. Bob’s current hobbies include traveling, fishing, hunting, wildlife conservation, and has most recently celebrated a privileged appointment into a new society: Grand-parenting to his son’s new twins, John David and Elizabeth Anne.
Bob and Cindy Flannigan reside in a nest now empty save for their 3 beloved dogs. They live in Monette on property once belonging to his great-grandmother.
Dr. Bob is a permanent member of the University of Tennessee Fund and President’s Club. Professionally Dr. Bob maintains membership in the
- American Dental Association (ADA)
- the Arkansas State Dental Association (Served at state and local level as the state chairman of peer review.)
- Northeast Arkansas District Dental Society (Served as Vice President and District Chairman of Peer Review. )
- Pierre Fauchard Academy
And with all that on his plate, Dr. Bob has been gradually limiting his role at the clinic while turning more of the patients and day-to-day operation over to his son David and daughter Rebekah.
